Do breaking bricks means Good self defense???

Let me start with a funny short story/conversation which one of my student said to me.

The conversation was between a Taekwondo instructor and a student’s mother.

Student’s mother: Hey sir. How r u?
Instructor: I am fine. How r u?
Student’s mother: How is my kid doing? Will she be upgraded to next level.
Instructor: She is doing great. Yes she will be upgraded to next level.
Student’s mother: What level sir…!!! She still cannot break bricks…!!!

Last statement by mother is such that breaking bricks is the only thing all about any martial arts. This sounds funny to me and embarrassing moment for that instructor. Actually that instructor got entrapped in it's own's nest ( In Hindi known as Apne hi jaal me fass jaana). These taekwondo and Karate teachers and even few kung fu teachers have depicted martial arts to world in such a way that martial arts is all about breaking bricks.

Actually according to me breaking bricks is good skill if brick is the actual brick used in construction work. I haven’t found even a single martial artist who can break such bricks except on videos by Shaolin Monks. Even I have learnt to break bricks ( Half thick ones, Marbles etc.) when I was a kid and still haven’t started to learn martial arts. I have done this behind my school library which was under construction and I used to break multiple marbles. Thickest one I have broke is the half thick bricks. Then when I joined a Taekwondo camp for 1 month, I saw they used to break bricks which were easily breakable. Taekwondo teacher taught us to break those multiple bricks within a month……Lolz…

BREAKING BRICKS HAS NO PLACE IN SELF DEFENSE. Yes you read it right. Though it’s a good skill to show off something for those who are interested but it has no meaning in self defense. For example: If someone can break world’s strongest brick and still cannot touch me in a fight and get’s hit most of the times then what is a use of that skill. Actually breaking brick means one can break hands or legs of a stationary opponent but no guarantee against a moving opponent. And when fight happens even a common man keeps moving in a fight. No one gives his limb to martial artist and remain stationary while he/she is breaking his/her bones.

In a movie “ENTER THE DRAGON”, when Bruce Lee’s opponent breaks a board infront of him to scare him, Bruce lee says:  “Boards dot hit back”.  This means one can break only a stationary opponent/board/bricks but not a moving opponent/ board/bricks.

Breaking Bricks in martial arts : Bruce lee

I am not against any kind of martial arts style but my all intention is to make people aware that if you can break brick that means nothing in self defense. Because many students believe that if they can break bricks then they can protect themselves too. And this unawareness can prove costly to their life in real fights as they will be in wrong impression that they can fight.

For knowing actual martial arts and for having awareness of any martial arts style, contact me freely. I will be happy to help you irrespective of whether you join our academy or not.

Teacher and student relation - Then and now

India is great land of culture and values. Actually in most cases (if not in all), India was a great land of culture and values. In ancient times, we used to have very great relation of teacher and student.

Teacher and student relation was not limited to few hours of training. Instead student was devoted to teacher for 24 hours (and lifetime) and teacher was devoted to his student for 24 hours (and lifetime).

Ok Let’s go back in ancient times….

Kids (irrespective of any caste) of certain age had to leave home (parents) for few years to live at his Guru’s Ashram so that student can devote himself fully to his training . Kids had to take care of Guru’s Ashram (like cleaning, supervision etc) which was part of his training (vidiya). Shastra (Knowledge of martial arts including weapons) and Shaastra (Knowledge of Vedas) both were mandatory training. Knowledge of dance, music, painting etc. was also given and different student specialized in different-different arts as per their ability/ interest shown to his Guru.

All the finance to manage Ashram was provided by King (including villages) of that area. And so student didn’t had to pay to his teacher anything monthly except the Guru Dakshina (usually given after finishing training) by student. Guru Dakshina was not any contract liability of the student. Instead it was part of values of ancient Indian system and this was given by every student as per Guru’s wish or as per student’s ability. After finishing training student left Ashram for their home and further Karmas.

Time kept changing and ancient India was ruled by Mughals and Britishers who tried their best to destroy Indian culture including our education system and they succeded a lot in their aims. Whatever happened, has happened. Let me focus on what is happening right now. Most of today’s Indians are still getting inspired by western culture and following them. As a result, teacher and student relation has turned into a Customer-Client relationship. I wrote “most of the” because few are still trying to follow that tradition. I do not mean leaving home and living in teacher’s house/school/ academy. I mean few are still trying to maintain that respect and loving relationship with their teacher. This is rarely found in today’s education system based on western concepts. Everything has changed a lot. Both teacher and student have corrupted this relationship. You can find teacher beating their student at extreme levels and worse even raping them. Just read a news few days back where a teacher hit his student’s head on desk so badly that student got facial paralysis. On the other hand we have student’s who see their teacher as a beautiful lady/ handsome teacher. I mean for a student teacher should be a teacher and not any man/woman. In some cases student make plans to even beat their teacher. I have seen this personally in my school days. So what have we gained by getting inspired from western culture. Personally I am not against westerners. I am not against anyone in this world. But I have right to say wrong as wrong and right as right. Ancient Indian culture was way ahead than western culture. When I say ancient India  I mean Ancient and not corrupted Indian culture we had few fifty to hundred years back (not so sure about this year) including now seen in villages.

Coming to martial arts and it’s academies. Very very few teachers are trying to maintain respect and loving relationship with their students and fully dedicated hours of their life to each other. Fully dedicated do not mean giving up the job, school, college etc. as this has become a norm for our society to survive. But it means trying to implement whatever student have learnt from their teacher. On teacher part, it means looking and trying to solve all kinds of life’s problem of their student by showing them a right way/path irrespective of the time including giving knowledge of the art in which teacher specializes.
But many teacher’s (including their academies) are following other way of life. This is again due to western influence. Teacher has become a trainer/instructor and Student has become a customer for their teacher. Learning for a student has been kept limited for few hours (usually one or two hours). Student pay and instructor teach and so everything is corrupted. This is because student (or his parents) thinks that money can buy everything including knowledge. But according to me MONEY CAN NEVER BUY KNOWLEDGE. For ex. I may teach someone who is interested in having this customer client relationship due to money requirement but I may not be able to give the very core martial arts knowledge to such kind of students. But fact is I do not enjoy teaching such students. I usually get bore with such students.

How this relation can be improved in today’s world??? How can this ancient tradition be brought back into modern world???

  1. Teacher should not be someone just having done any certified course. But instead should be someone who enjoys his work. This is how teacher will gain respect in eyes of student.
  2. Student has to respect their teacher as someone who is going to change their life.
  3. Student has to understand that their teacher has expenses and family. So least that can done is to pay their fees on time.
  4. Teacher should not limit student for any particular hours. Instead dedicated students must be given training any time of the day as per available time of teacher.
  5. Teacher should always be present, at-least on phone, to solve their student’s life’s problem and to motivate them when required.
  6. Teacher should not teach just for money though it is one of the basic requirement. Instead should teach looking at the dedication and aim of student.
  7. Student has to take care of teacher and teacher has to take care of his student as per their respective ability for lifetime. This relation is not for few days or years.

Let’s finish this post with below line.

Student is like some candle which is still not lighted up. Teacher is like fire which lights the candle and then you see the light in a room.

Note: If you believe in above theory of Teacher student relationship, you can contact and learn in this academy from Ranjit Mishra. Martial arts classes are run in Indirapuram and Vaishali.

KARATE IN INDIA

Karate means Empty Hand. It was developed/ influenced by Chinese Kung Fu style name Fujian White Crane Kung Fu. It is mostly known by martial artist that Kung Fu was influenced by Indian martial arts. This may be influenced by either South Indian martial arts (Kalaripayattu or Silabam etc.) or North Indian martial arts (Sanatan Shastar Vidiya).
ate belt
Belt system of Martial arts:

In 1880's Jigoro Kano who used to taught Judo founded belt system for Europeans as to motivate their students for competition between them and to keep track of their ability. Please note before this there was no place for belt system in martial arts world. Many system (not few) still do not favour belt system.
After Judo, Karate Master Funakoshi Gichin also adopted Belt system, might be for the same reason.

Please think why before 1880's martial artist never used belt ranking system and still not adopted by many teachers in other martial arts as well as Karate too..!!!

But yes one thing was for sure. Belts were not so easy to earn. Students need to do very serious hard work for getting their belts. Martial artist used to have a spiritual link with their belts.

But today this whole thing is corrupted in India. Yes Karate is corrupted in India. This might be true for other countries too specially western countries but let me focus on my country only. Politics have entered in Karate in India. Today Indian Karate is so corrupted that it's dirt is touching other martial arts teacher too. Belt system in Karate has been a money making machine. Students are being charged a lot for each belt system. And my point is not this charge only. Actually belts are being given without any hard work and with people having money. I have seen people who get their belts and even federation certificate by giving money. Recently few months back I saw someone getting his blackbelt and certificate with Rs. 7000. Such is a value of belt system right now. What is the use of such kind of belt when you cannot defend yourself anywhere. People need to seriously think why they are fooling themselves. Why they want belts..!!! Why they want someone to tell them about their ability through belts..!!!

Ability is not something which others have to tell you about. But it is something which you need to  feel. For example: Many times students ask their teacher (specially in Karate and Taekwondo world) whether they can defend themselves or not. And teachers says "Yes. You can defend yourself from many people as you have a higher belt". Now this is a foolish question with super foolish answer. Student has to feel and must have a clarity about this ability. Student cannot depend on their teacher's answer to know about their ability. Instead must be very clear whether they can defend themselves or not. It is a feeling and not just knowing about something.

Moral of the story: Do not just look for belts and certifications in any field. Instead look for a learning so that you can feel what a real martial artist can.

HOW TO FIND “MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES NEAR ME”

This is very important posts for those who don’t know how to join a good martial arts classes/ academy.

If you are searching a good martial arts class or academy then the very first thing you need to find is what you want to learn…!!! Which style you want to learn and why you want to learn that particular style…!! By knowing this you will save your precious time of your life by not learning wrong style.

For ex.: If you want to learn martial arts for self defense and you join Karate (in India) and Taekwondo, then you are wasting your time. You will never know about real self defense.
Or
If you want to learn martial arts for belts, then you can join Karate and Taekwondo and can keep that belts (which you will get) in briefcase for showing that belts to your grandchildren. But yes Martial arts experts says “Belts are just for keeping your pants up”.

There can be variety of reasons why you want to learn martial arts. Reasons can be fitness, Real life Self defense, Learning specific art, For acrobatics, For learning weapons, For Fun, For mental strength and peace, For physical strength, For flexibility etc. etc. etc.

If you know the answer to above question then you have to search

“How many martial arts classes are running near you…!!!

After finding this, the very first thing you must know is who is/are teaching in that academy. How much knowledge that teacher has and from where that teacher has learnt martial arts (Because there are many liars in the martial arts industry too who will tell you that they know everything in this world but knows nothing). Is teacher passionate enough for teaching his skills. Because passionate teacher will make you learn anyhow whether he has any facility or not and will also motivate you when you get demotivated for learning further.

You will get the answer for these questions from academy’s website (if any) or by directly talking to teacher or by taking reference from any student already learning there.

After having answer for all these questions, last thing you can search is the facility academy is providing. Though it do not matter when you have knowledgeable teacher but it can be your bonus point if you have both.

I hope, now you will be able to find suitable academy and teacher for your learning.

If you are finding Martial arts or fitness classes in Indirapuram or in Vaishali you can check out our website and knowledge of Mr. Ranjit Mishra.

Real Kalaripayattu- Different ranges of combat, South Indian Martial arts

If above video do not open soon, plz click the link-

You all may have seen Kalaripayattu beauty and acrobatic aspects. You all may have seen Kalaripayattu beutiful performance.

But till date I have rearely seen anyone actually knowing Kalari combat. Though most of the Kalari experts know about Kalari Marma points (pressure points) but they lack the understanding of how to reach the Marma of a trained fighter to hit. Me having combat knowledge of Muay Thai, Muay Boran, Kung Fu, MMA, Sanatan Shastar Vidiya (North Indian Martial arts) is able to find the actual Kalari combat style.

This video is a presentation of Kalari different ranges of combat and more videos will be upoaded for better understanding of Kalari combat.

TECHNIQUE VS SKILLS- IF YOU DONT KNOW THIS, YOU KNOW NOTHING

Though these (Technique and skills) are more of a general terms which are applicable in all parts of life and are applicable in every art but let me explain this is terms of martial arts combat.

In my martial arts journey, I have seen many people who are often confused with this term.

This confusion is more among traditional martial artist because traditional martial artist relies on a lot of techniques without practicing enough and becoming skilled in that. And this is why most of the time traditional martial artist gets defeated by hands of MMA and even Muay Thai guys in bare hand fighting. I am not including all traditional martial artist in this statement but most of them are included.

I think you all might have get an idea what is the difference between technique and skills. Let me simplify it a lot more.

Technique means what way one knows in tackllng a certain situation or certain technique. This means technical person knows how to counter any technique but may or may not be able to actually apply in real combat situation.

Skill means expertise in applying a certain technique. One can be said as skilled person, when one has practiced enough in all kinds of situation and can apply what he/she knows. This means he/she just not only know a certain technique but can apply that technique in any kind of situation.

If i have to differentiate between two in a single line, i will differentiate it as below:

TECHNIQUE + PRACTICE MANY TIMES + VARIOUS SITUATIONS = SKILLED PERSON

So one who is very technical may be knowing a lot of stuff. But one who is skilled, may or may not know a lot but can certainly apply things what he knows.

For example, in the picture iam applying Finger lock. Though I know this technique but this do not means I can apply this against every other fighter. This simply means I know this technique. I may be or may not be skilled enough in practical application.

Another thing in reality is I can apply this finger lock technique practically too. I may be sounding egoistic but let me be true to myself and to you.

I hope this makes it clear. Keep practicing hard and enough to become skilled and not just being technical if you want to live like a warrior.

Some of the Bruce lee Quotes -

I do not fear a man who has practiced 10000 kicks once, but i fear a man who has practiced one kick 10000 times.

Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough we must do.
